The ASCE Jacksonville Branch hosted its 4th Annual West Point Bridge Design Competition on Friday, May 18th at the UNF School of Engineering computer lab. The West Point Bridge Designer is free software that allows students to design and test virtual truss bridges. The winning bridge has the lowest cost while also supporting the design load. The contest consisted of 16 middle and high school students who competed in teams of one or two. First place for middle school went to Kyle Kelly and Marshall Hettinger of Lake Asbury Junior High School and first place for high school went to Corey Van Dorn of Orange Park High School. These students will have a chance to compete at the state competition during the ASCE Florida Section Annual meeting held at the Double Tree by Hilton in Orlando on July World Golf Village Resort on July 20th.

Florida East Coast Industries, Inc. (FECI) recently announced its intention to develop a privately owned, operated and maintained passenger rail service connecting South Florida and Orlando by 2014. If the 240-mile route, which would combine 200 miles of existing track and 40 miles of new, is successful, FECI plans to extend service to Jacksonville and Tampa. The Florida Section ASCE Annual Conference was held on July 13th – 16th at the International Golf Village in St. Augustine. This event is the largest event the Florida Section holds each year with about 400 engineers and managers attending. There were great speakers and topics at each of the five different technical “break-out” sessions. These sessions provided Engineering Management, Geotechnical, Water/Wastewater, Transportation, and Structural Professional Development Hours.
We would like to say thanks to all of our volunteers and sponsors who helped out with our event. We would also like to mention and congratulate Tom Grogan who won the Engineer of the Year award at the conference.
